When Life Still Works — But No Longer Feels Quite Right

You do not have to be in crisis to know that something needs to change

Perhaps most parts of your life still function reasonably well.

You work, meet your responsibilities and keep things moving.

But internally, something feels different.

A career, relationship, role or way of living that once made sense may no longer fit

quite so comfortably. Or perhaps nothing dramatic has happened at all. You have

simply reached the point where continuing exactly as

you are no longer feels like enough.

You may find yourself thinking:

  • I know something needs to change, but I don't know what.
  • My life looks fine on paper — so why doesn't it feel better?
  • I keep thinking about making changes without really moving.
  • I know what I don't want, but I'm less clear about what I do want.
  • I want the next part of my life to feel more deliberate.

That experience can feel like stuckness. But feeling stuck does not

necessarily mean you are doing nothing. Sometimes stuckness is what

happens between one chapter and the next

People who feel stuck are often thinking very hard. You may be researching,

planning, reconsidering decisions and trying to understand why things no longer feel right.

The difficulty is that more thinking does not always create more direction. Sometimes

you genuinely need more information. Sometimes two things you value are pulling

in different directions — security and freedom, achievement and rest, belonging

and independence. Sometimes you are depleted and do not currently have

much capacity for change. And sometimes an old version of your life has

reached its limits while the next version has not yet become clear.

That is not necessarily failure. It may be transition.

You do not need the whole answer before you move

One reason stuckness becomes difficult is that the question grows too large

What should I do with the rest of my life?

What is my purpose?

Should I stay or leave?

What if I make the wrong choice?

These questions matter. But they can also create an impossible standard:

I must know the right destination before I take the first step.

But real life rarely works like that.

You may not know exactly what you want your future to look like, but you may

already know that you want more of something: freedom, connection,

health, creativity, meaning, challenge, steadiness or choice.

That is enough to begin working with.

Instead of asking:

What is the perfect answer?

a more useful question can be:

What would move my life a little closer towards what matters now?

Sometimes clarity follows movement rather than preceding it.

Your past is information — not instruction

Life transitions do not begin from a blank page. You bring experience with you. That experience

matters. But it can quietly become prediction. Because something failed before, you may expect

it to fail again. Because security mattered enormously at one stage of life, you may assume it must

always remain the overriding priority. Because you have long been the dependable one, the strong

one or the person who keeps everyone else happy, choices outside that identity can feel

strangely uncomfortable.

Sometimes the question becomes:

Is this still true — or has it simply been true for a long time?

You do not have to reject the person you were. But you are allowed to ask

whether the next part of your life needs something different.

Where PERMA Pathways comes in

Feeling stuck is one of the most natural starting points for PERMA Pathways because

the programme is not built around fixing one isolated symptom. It works on two

connected questions:

What is making life harder than it needs to be now?

and

What would help you build something stronger from here?

That might mean reducing stress or overthinking enough to create more mental space.

It might mean examining beliefs that have become restrictive. Or it might mean

becoming clearer about your values, strengths, relationships, priorities and the

kind of future you actually want to build. The aim is not to produce a perfect

life plan. It is to develop enough clarity, agency and self-trust to create a

useful direction of travel.

What might we explore?

The work is personalised, but several themes commonly matter when someone feels stuck.

What matters now?

Values can change in priority as life changes. What mattered at 25 does not have to organise

your life at 40 or 50. Getting clearer about what genuinely matters now can make

choices easier to judge.

What strengths are already available?

You are not starting again from nothing. Experience has given you skills, judgement and

strengths — including some you may have stopped noticing because they have become

ordinary to you. Recognising what you already bring can change what feels possible.

Which beliefs still deserve their authority?

Ideas such as:

I should have worked this out by now

People like me don't do that

I can't afford to get this wrong

can begin sounding like facts after enough repetition.

PERMA Pathways creates space to examine whether they are still helping

What would movement actually look like?

A preferred future does not need to be grand. It may begin with an ordinary week

that contains more of what matters and less of what no longer fits. Then the next

step becomes easier to identify. Not the step that solves everything. The step that

changes your position enough to learn something.

Building a life that fits

PERMA Pathways draws on the PERMA model of flourishing: positive emotion, engagement,

relationships, meaning and accomplishment, alongside the essential contribution of

physical health. That gives us a broader lens than simply asking, How do I stop

feeling stuck? We can also ask:

What absorbs and engages you?

Which relationships strengthen your life?

What makes effort worthwhile?

What do you want to become better at?

What would make your ordinary life feel more recognisably your own?

A good life does not have to be dramatic. For many people, the aim is something

quieter: enough health, connection, challenge, meaning and choice to feel

that life is being lived rather than simply managed.

Is PERMA Pathways the right kind of support?

PERMA Pathways is a structured 10-session personal-development and wellbeing

programme combining Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, positive psychology,

self-hypnosis, reflection and practical application.

It tends to suit thoughtful adults who are functioning reasonably well but recognise

that they are not flourishing — and who have enough capacity to reflect,

experiment and apply what they learn.

You do not need to know exactly what you want before you begin

Uncertainty may be part of the reason you are considering the programme. But you do need some

willingness to engage with the process and begin taking greater ownership of what comes

next. If you mainly want flexible help with one specific problem, standard Solution

Focused Hypnotherapy may be the more appropriate starting point.

And sometimes the barriers are not primarily psychological. Health, money, caring

responsibilities, workplace conditions or difficult relationships can place genuine

limits on what is possible. PERMA Pathways does not pretend otherwise. The aim is

to identify where meaningful choice exists — and use it well.

You do not need certainty before you begin

Feeling stuck can create the impression that movement must wait until clarity arrives. Often

the relationship works both ways. Some clarity comes through reflection. Some comes

through conversation. And some only appears once you take a thoughtful step

and discover what happens.

You do not need to decide what the whole rest of your life should look like. You do need

enough direction to begin building the next part of it deliberately.

If you are functioning but no longer flourishing — and you are ready to explore what a

stronger, more meaningful next chapter might look like — PERMA Pathways

may be worth exploring.
