Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines the best from Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and the transformative capability of hypnosis

Talking therapies are frequently miscast as requiring an enormous amount of time and financial commitment. But helpful, goal-oriented therapy can produce positive results after a small number of sessions. Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) has been gaining momentum as a powerful therapeutic approach since its inception in the 1980s. By focusing on solutions instead of problems, it asks clients to think about their best life and to draw upon strengths in their lives. This can help bring about the desired change for their preferred future.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is Evidence based

There has been a great deal of empirical outcome research on SFBT. There have been over 150 randomised clinical trials (RCTs) with SFBT, and eight meta-analyses based on these. The conclusion of the eight meta-analyses is that SFBT is an effective approach to the treatment of psychological problems. It achieves effect sizes similar to other evidenced-based approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy. Often these effects are achieved in fewer average sessions. And the approach style is less intrusive than most other treatment models. That is, SFBT is an inherently collaborative approach and does not involve confrontation or interpretation. Given its equivalent effectiveness, shorter duration, and “user-friendly” collaborative approach, SFBT is an excellent first-choice evidenced-based psychotherapy approach for most psychological, behavioural, and relational problems. The references below provide a flavour of the research demonstrating the effectiveness of SFBT

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a future focused, goal orientated approach to helping

Therapy is focused on your strengths. This enables you to look forward to a more positive future where you are more in control of your thoughts, actions, and interactions. We are far more interested in using the present to build the desired future than picking over the past. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is built on pragmatism:

  • If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.
  • What works?, do more of it.
  • When it’s not working, do something different.
  • Small steps can lead to big changes.
  • Solutions and problems are not necessarily directly related to each other.
  • The language for identifying and implementing solutions is different from that needed to investigate and understand problems.
  • No problems happen all the time – there are always exceptions that can be utilised.
  • The future is both created and negotiable.
  • Clients – not the therapists! – are the expert of the clients’ lived experience.

Hypnosis supports the Solution Focused Brief Therapy approach

Moving beyond the stock description of trance being a state of focused relaxation, recent neurological research has identified characteristic patterns of brain activity associated with particular brain states. There are recognised patterns associated with problem solving, being in a state of panic and being properly relaxed. There is also a characteristic pattern for being in trance. MRI studies have shown some parts of our brain reduce in activity while others get very busy. ECG studies have demonstrated a characteristic shift in brain wave patterns while in trance compared to a normal waking state. This pattern goes a long way to explaining many of the common effects I see with my clients as I’ll explain when we discuss the brain model. These observations are consistent with each of the theories which underpin Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

How I Can Help You

Triune Brain Theory

Paul MacLean introduced the Triune Brain concept in the 1960’s to describe the functionally distinct layers of the mammalian brain. It has become a widely used way of thinking about the overall functional organisation of the brain.

Polyvagal Theory

Stephen Porges proposed the Polyvagal theory in 1994, it basic idea: that the level of safety we feel impacts our wellbeing. This has shifted understanding of how we can live our best lives.

Broaden & Build Theory

Barbara Fredrickson brought us the Broaden & Build theory in 1998. It shows that experiencing positive emotions broadens our momentary thought-action repertoires (the range of options available to us at any given moment) which, in turn, serves to build our enduring resources i.e. better options for coping and thriving.
